Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions

The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions
(Named in Memory of a Courageous Woman Who Died While Serving as a Missionary in China over 100 Years Ago)

Thanks for giving
A record-breaking $154 million was collected for the 2013 Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, thanks to the generous giving of Southern Baptists to international missions. The amount given was $4.8 million more than the previous year. Let’s join with other churches across the nation to continue answering the call to give. Every dollar donated to the offering goes directly to help fund our missionaries who share the love of Jesus all over the world. By giving to the offering, each of us plays a key role in the work God is doing to expand His kingdom.

Why give?
The Bible tells us in Deuteronomy 16:17, “Everyone must appear with a gift suited to his means, according to the blessing the Lord your God has given you” (HCSB). As followers of Christ, we are called to give of the blessings we have received to bless others. When we give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, we are helping send and support our missionaries who share Christ’s love with the lost and hurting. One hundred percent of the offering is used in this one sacred effort.

How does our giving make an impact?
When our church partners with IMB and gives to the Lottie Moon offering, missionaries are able to share the gospel with unreached people groups, train believers to start new churches, assist in the planting of new churches, show Christ’s love to those in distress, and, most importantly, work to spread the kingdom of God. According to IMB’s 2013 Annual Statistical Report, our missionaries shared the gospel with 1.7 million people, trained 23,000 nationals to start new churches and helped plant 6,200 churches. While those statistics are exciting, there are still 4 billion people who remain lost. More giving will allow IMB to send more missionaries so that more people are reached for Christ!

All need to hear
A people group is the largest community in which the gospel can be shared without many barriers. There are about 11,250 people groups in the world; of those, more than 6,500 people groups remain unreached, meaning less than two percent are evangelical Christian. About 3,000 of those are unengaged – no one is working among them at all. Although many are hard to reach, they all need to hear the gospel. Let’s join in one sacred effort by giving to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Our gifts to the offering support our missionaries who are working to share the love of Christ with those people groups still unreached and unengaged.

How much should I give?
The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering goal for this year is $175 million. This goal is based on real needs as we Southern Baptists work together to reach the remaining peoples for Christ. When the Lord calls us to give, He knows how much we are able to give – and what He wants is a gift given from a joyful heart. If you need help deciding how much to give, consider basing your goal on how much it takes to support a single missionary. On average, it costs about $50,800 a year, which equals $977 a week and $139 a day to support a missionary. Support includes housing, salary, children’s education, medical expenses, retirement and other expenses.

How can I pray?
IMB’s vision is for “a multitude from every language, tribe and nation knowing and worshipping our Lord Jesus Christ.” For that to happen, we must pray diligently for the thousands of unreached people groups – billions of individuals – who don’t know their savior. Paul tells us in Romans 10:1, “Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God concerning them is for their salvation” (HCSB). We can commit to pray for specific people groups named at imb.org/one. We can pray for our Southern Baptist missionaries who are sharing the Good News with the lost and being a light in the world. And we can pray for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, that we Southern Baptists will continue supporting our missionaries sent from our churches – and give even more to send more waiting to answer God’s call.
